Program Introduction

Program Description

Toxicology is the science of understanding the adverse effects of chemical substances on humans, animals, and the environment. Its primary aim is to identify potential toxic effects and develop strategies for their prevention and treatment. Through appropriate experimentation, scientific evaluation, and expert judgment, toxicology contributes to reducing the risk of harmful effects, some of which have historically had catastrophic consequences. Toxicology is a multidisciplinary field that draws on several scientific disciplines, including physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, pharmacology, pathology, and epidemiology. The Ph.D. program in Toxicology provides advanced academic and research training designed to prepare students for a wide range of professional career paths. Graduates are equipped to pursue leadership and research roles in various areas of toxicology, including mechanistic, clinical, analytical, forensic, environmental, and regulatory toxicology.

Aims and Objectives

The primary aim of the Ph.D. program in Toxicology is to prepare students to conduct high-level, independent research in diverse areas of toxicology. Through comprehensive coursework and advanced research training, the program prepares graduates for careers in academia, hospitals, industry, and government agencies.

The specific objectives of the program are to:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles and major areas of toxicology.

  • Enable students to acquire specialized expertise in their chosen research areas.

  • Develop the skills required to design, conduct, analyze, and interpret scientific research in toxicology.

  • Prepare students to produce high-quality research findings suitable for publication in scientific journals.

  • Foster the ability to conduct independent research and make significant, sustained contributions to the advancement of toxicological science.

Specific Competencies and Skills

Upon completion of the program, graduates are expected to be able to undertake educational, research, expert, and consultancy responsibilities in the field of toxicology.

  • Education: Contribute to teaching toxicology to students in various disciplines, according to university needs.

  • Research: Design, conduct, and evaluate basic and applied research in different areas of toxicology.

  • Expert Services: Detect and analyze toxic agents using standard and innovative methods, and contribute to the assessment and management of poisoning cases.

  • Consultancy Services: Provide consultation on the prevention and management of acute and chronic toxic effects.

  • Regulatory Affairs: Contribute to the development of standard protocols and new testing methods to strengthen the scientific basis for regulatory and decision-making processes.
