At the Heart of the Zagros Mountains
Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province is located in southwestern Iran, in the central Zagros mountain range. Covering an area of approximately 16,416 square kilometres, the province is known for its mountainous landscape, rivers, springs, protected natural areas and rich cultural heritage.
Shahrekord, the provincial capital, is located approximately 2,066 metres above sea level and is recognised as the highest provincial capital in Iran. For this reason, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari is widely known as “The Roof of Iran.”
From Regional Healthcare to an Academic Medical University
Before the development of the province’s modern health system, healthcare services were limited to a small number of hospitals and clinics, primarily located in urban areas. The shortage of physicians, nurses, midwives and community health workers created significant barriers to healthcare access.
In 1985, the Regional Health Organisation was transformed into Shahrekord University of Medical Sciences and Health Services. This transformation introduced a comprehensive institutional structure covering healthcare, medical treatment, education, research, food and drug regulation, student and cultural affairs, and management development.
The university began its academic activities in 1986 by admitting 240 students in three fields of study, across two academic levels and two faculties. Since then, it has grown into one of the key medical education and healthcare institutions in southwestern Iran.
