Introduction to Scientometrics

Scientometrics is the field concerned with the measurement and analysis of scientific activities and research outputs. It evaluates the scientific contributions of researchers, universities, and countries through quantitative indicators.

Scientometric indicators are used to assess both the quantity and quality of scientific research outputs. These indicators can provide a basis for evaluating, ranking, and promoting academic faculty members.

Scientometrics is a valuable tool for identifying the strengths and weaknesses of different research fields. It enables university administrators, research managers, and policymakers to plan effectively and guide scientific, human, and financial resources toward areas of strategic importance.

Scientometric studies are not limited to scientific journal articles. Other forms of scholarly output, including books, patents, theses, dissertations, government reports, and additional research documents, can also serve as sources for scientometric analysis.

Scientometric Indicators and Their Importance

Researchers in scientometrics continually seek to represent qualitative characteristics through measurable quantitative values that accurately reflect those characteristics.

These quantitative measures are known as scientometric indicators.

Scientometric indicators play an important role in:

  • Evaluating scientific and academic performance.

  • Measuring the impact and influence of research activities.

  • Ranking researchers, academic institutions, and research organizations.

  • Comparing scientific achievements across individuals, institutions, and research fields.

  • Supporting the evaluation and promotion of academic faculty members.

These indicators help universities assess their scientific standing, evaluate research quality, and measure scientific productivity.

They also support the assessment of institutional success in achieving educational and research objectives, the identification of scientific progress across different subject areas, and the recognition of influential faculty members and researchers within the University.
